I have used this book in my last and current job and it has helped educate and focus our teams on optimizing the business. In small organizations there sometimes tends to be a lack of complete focus across the organization. Everyone is working hard but perhaps not always on what the leadership may or may not have communicated. This text has helped me achieve measurable success in focusing the organization.
This book remains close at hand at all times and I believe that it is an excellent framework to put many other business optimization tools to work with positive results. I have experienced the cultural transformation with present and past employers and this would not have been possible without the steps outlined in detail in this text. It is well done and well used.

Business Optimization Six Steps to a Sustained Performance Culture Dr Greg Howes 9780990845492 Books Reviews

This book provided me and my team with an immediately applicable "how-to" guide for real cultural change utilizing an insightful synthesis of systems theory, organizational psychology, and business management. The book is based on the author's real-world experience and sound theoretical knowledge of these disciplines. Dr. Howes clearly "walks" his "talk" and tells it like it is.
In order to overcome the natural resistance to change within an organization, a systematic approach must be taken; this approach must deal with the whole system, which includes people, processes, and systems; it must begin with defining the organization, developing the vision, and detailing the steps along the way, according to Greg Howes in this book.

The book describes in some detail the business optimization process followed by the author’s organization, Treaty Consulting Group. The six steps are

• Create the performance vision, which includes a number of processes to develop team cohesion and create clarity
• Understand processes and procedures, which includes workshops to define processes and create an action plan
• Systems and tools, which requires consideration of the relative merits of developing and buying
• People and skills, which includes defining job roles and deciding whether to train existing staff or hire new staff
• Systematic structure, which includes defining the best organizational hierarchy; and
• Strategy emerges, which includes process measurement and the performance measurements cycle

Whereas some authors prefer to remain general in order to avoid giving away their secrets, I was left with the impression that the author of this book has been fully candid about his processes. The level of detail even included such matters as the hourly agendas for three-day planning workshops and the things which the senior leader should do while personally hosting lunches for employee involvement teams.

I was not completely comfortable with all of the author’s ideas, such as his recommendation to “purchase whatever tools and systems are required and to customize them as little as possible,” but I do think this book would be a valuable resource for senior leaders of businesses which are thinking of undergoing a business optimization process.
In the current business environment, there are of couple of things that stand out across most industries. First is the rapid pace of change that is occurring in most segments. Next is the difficulty to stand apart from your competition. Said differently, it is becoming more and more difficult to distinguish one company from another based solely on the features of their products. This means that if you hope to remain competitive, you will need to find new and better ways to remain relevant in today's highly competitive markets.

Dr. Greg Howes, author of Business Optimization, has provided a solid blueprint for any business to follow that help them optimize their business.

Optimizing any business requires change. And anyone who has attempted to bring about cultural change in an organization, knows what a daunting task that can be. As Dr. Greg points out, "Without cooperation and support from colleagues, the best plan will fail." He goes on to explain that the first step is to "focus on building cohesion and clarity first.

Dr. Howes is the CEO of Treaty Consulting Group, LLC, a firm that specializes in helping organizations optimize their business. His writings are based primarily on the insights he has gained from working with numerous organizations worldwide over a 30 year period. The concepts he shares are not theory, but based on real world experience.

As the subtitle indicates, his approach involves a six step process. The first step is to create a vision. This is not the typical vision statement that sounds good but is detached from reality. Dr. Greg gives a very detailed process for creating a "Performance Vision". He discusses how to form the team, how to create the vision, and ensure that there is buy-in from all stakeholders.

Step two is Understanding Process and Procedures. He lays the groundwork by saying, "All work is a process and all processes can be designed, measured and improved. Process management is the foundation of business optimization and the cornerstone of performance culture." Again, he goes into great detail explaining the exact steps he takes during an actual assignment.

Step 3 is System and Tools; Step 4 is People and Skills; Step 5 is Systematic Structure and Step 6 is Strategy Emerges. For each of these steps, Dr. Howes walks the reader through the process in detail, providing narrative, diagrams and formulas as appropriate.

Dr. Greg writes in a business casual style, that is, it is conversational but includes numerous business concepts that should be easily understood by business readers. He provides many real world examples to illustrate the points he is making. There are also many diagrams or other illustrations to clarify the ideas being presented.

At the end of the book is a substantial bibliography along with some additional resource material in the appendix. Appendix A includes a complete Program Management Plan - this is a set of Program Worksheets necessary for a working assignment. Appendix B is an Organizational Values Questionnaire and Appendix C is a set of Dr. Greg's bullet point notes. This can be used as a study guide or a checklist for implementing an optimization plan.

This is an excellent detail plan for implementing an optimization plan for any business. While this is a very complete and detailed guide, there will be a learning curve and you would probably we wise to seek help in implementing the plan.

I was provided a review copy of this book.
I started reading the book a few days ago, and I have started to enjoy the topics presented in it. The author presents complex ideas in a simple and interesting way that attracts the reader to follow up. I'm looking forward to go deeper in the pages to understand more the steps necessary to optimize a business environment. At the very first pages, some thoughts brought up by the author triggered different scenarios of, potential, application of the process discussed. Yet, I have to continue reading to be able to confirm those thoughts.
